The Studio

Johanna Selleck - Flute

Johanna is composer, flautist, and musicologist with a MMus (performance) and PhD (composition), University of Melbourne, where she currently teaches and is an honorary Fellow. Her compositions have been performed by internationally renowned performers in Australia and overseas including in South Africa, Malta, Israel, Italy, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, and the US. Her recordings appear on the Tall Poppies, Move Records, and Navona (USA) labels. She has had an extensive performance career including principal flute with the State Concert Orchestra (Victoria), Grainger Wind Symphony, Ensemble Zauberflöte, and numerous show orchestras and chamber ensembles. In 2007, she recorded her own flute concerto, Unspoken Dialogues, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Her music is published by Reed Music and Lyrebird Press, her research is also widely published by Cambridge Scholars Press and in scholarly journals such as Australasian Music Research. Her composition Threads Through Time will be a keynote event for this concert.

Ingrid Leibbrandt - Piano

Ingrid began lessons at the age of five with Charles Segal in South Africa shortly before emigrating to Australia, where she studied classical piano, gaining her LMusA with Ronald Farren-Price. This was followed by undergraduate studies at the Canberra School of Music and postgraduate studies in Aural and Music Theory Pedagogy at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Ingrid made research trips to Sweden while working as an aural lecturer at the Canberra School of Music, the Victorian College of the Arts and the University of Melbourne. Her book contains her early research, and the National Swedish Library for Music and Theatre has an archive of all her interviews and recordings.

Jill Sullivan - Mezzo Soprano

Jill has performed throughout Australia in opera and concert. She has performed with Opera Australia since 2016, Opera Queensland since 2011, was a resident artist for the West Australian Opera (1989-2007) and recorded for the former Victorian State Opera (1989). Jill has extensive concert repertoire performing chamber music through to French, German and American cabaret and Lieder to rave reviews. Other concert highlights include Alto Soloist for The Queensland Choir’s Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody and Handel’s Messiah. Future engagements include concerts for Art Song Canberra of Brahms, Mahler and Scandinavian songs and lectures for musical interests groups. Jill studied piano in Hobart, later studying singing and holds an Honours degree in Arts (Opera Studies) from the University of Manchester. She also holds a Bachelor in Medicine, University of Tasmania and Licentiate Diploma of Music (Singing) AMEB.

Barbara Hornung - Viola

Barbara had a childhood in idyllic surrounds immersed in music and art. She completed her Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree at the University of Adelaide in 1984 and also studied at The Hague Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands. Working with many orchestras including Orchestra Victoria and the Australian Pops Orchestra, she lists among her many highlights tours with Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa and Ray Charles. Inspiring experiences also included working with the South Australian State Opera, concerts around Australia in the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Christopher Hogwood and touring Europe in the Australian Youth Orchestra.
