Biog:
A vibrant and exciting new ensemble, aptly called Ensemble Mix has been formed on the North Shore. The core group consists of well known and highly respected freelance musicians: - Katrina Kelvin – Flute,
Ian Sykes – Clarinet and
Alison Evans – Bassoon.
Ensemble Mix is the brain child of Katrina and Ian who wanted to present chamber music concerts primarily to a North Shore audience in local venues and for Music Clubs, as well as to perform at all types of functions and to be adaptable for each circumstance surrounding the function. The name of the group allows for a variety of different instrument combinations whilst keeping the woodwind trio combination, as well as the expanded formations of woodwind quartet, quintet and even sextet as the need arises. “We wanted to form a group which could be quite diverse and perform concerts with a diverse repertoire which would be attractive to all types of music lovers.” Katrina says. Ensemble Mix premiered in July 2008 with a cocktail hour recital and played for the Willoughby Spring Festival in September.
Ensemble Mix performs a mixture of music from the classical, romantic and contemporary styles.
All musicians have Masters degrees in music and play professionally as well as teach locally. Katrina won the 2MBS-FM Young Performer of the Year in 2000, furthered her education overseas on a scholarship and is Principal Flute of Willoughby Symphony with whom she performed a concerto in October 2008. Ian is a freelance player, originally from Newcastle where he was awarded first class honours at the University of Newcastle. He is a freelancer and recently played for The Phantom of the Opera. Alison moved to Sydney from Queensland recently after winning the 2003 Double Reed Society competition and plays Principal Bassoon with the Central Coast Symphony Orchestra as well as teaching at the Central Coast Conservatorium.
